June 1, 2021Scholarships Announcement 2021
Although graduating from Riverview High School and École Mathieu-Martin, this year’s Wee College Scholarship recipients are coincidentally headed to the same university and into the same program of study. Concordia University’s business program is getting two future entrepreneurs who have a strong work ethic, leadership experience, and who value family and community. Both attribute these qualities to their experiences as children and their role models…their moms.
Jacob Walsh has been a Wee College kid since he was a toddler when his mom, Michaela, began her career as an educator many years ago. He has been a significant inspiration to Michaela’s professional growth and shift to business owner as a Wee College franchisee with husband, Jeff. Jacob says, “She’s the hardest worker I know, always striving to be better as a mom and a boss, which I admire. She’s taught me so much and I have her to thank for all of my accomplishments to date.”
Jacob’s outgoing personality and ability to make the most of any situation has earned him respect and admiration. It also means he contributes to his community. Over the years Jacob has hosted Wee College families for Christmas concerts, participated in community fundraising and charity events, but he feels his participation in sports has pushed him more as a leader and team player. He has played basketball and lacrosse, but his true love is hockey. He has played in Riverview minor hockey since age 7, and he says the experience has had a positive influence on who he is today. Going off to university in Quebec is just another travel adventure for Jacob. His love of travel comes from his family trips growing up. This sense of adventure took him on his most memorable to date, a solo exchange trip to Spain for a month. This cultural experience will remain, ‘one of the most fun and interesting experiences’ of his life. Jacob interests in the stock market, investments, along with his current on the job experience at a local investment firm, has led him to majoring in finance at Concordia University. We are pleased to award him a $1000 scholarship in the name of Evan Munro, son of founder Melody Munro. Wee College wishes Jacob all our best as he takes the next step on his business and entrepreneurial path. We are proud that Jacob is a Wee College alumnus and can see that he continues to embody our Fundamentals of being positive, healthy and confident. |
Yen Chi Dang became a member of our Wee College family when her parents, Chau and Son, became franchisees for the downtown location. She may not have run the Wee College halls as a child but has volunteered her time in many aspects from prop creator for concerts, classroom decorator, to constructing classroom equipment.Yen Chi is a passionate, determined and goal-oriented person. She attributes her business and entrepreneurial spirit to her mom, Chau. Yen Chi watched her mom grow fashion businesses in Vietnam and her childcare centers here in Moncton. Chau inspired Yen Chi to start her own online clothing business. “I got a real-life experience on what it means to run my own business and thus, I discovered my passion for business.” Her passion and determination during her participation in the Junior Achievement program earned Yen Chi the Young Women’s Leadership Award, the Chief Marketing Officer of the Year Award, and the Dieppe Distinguished Achiever Award.
At a young age, Yen Chi was taught the importance of giving back to community. At age nine, she accompanied her parents to a remote mountainous area of her home country, Vietnam. This trip was to deliver blankets, clothes, and other necessities to help the villagers cope with the colder winter months. “The experience pushed me beyond my boundaries as I was far away from ‘home’ and the life that I was accustomed to. Not only was it an eye-opening experience, but it was a big wake-up call that I should never take anything for granted. It made me realize the importance of living with compassion towards others.” Yen Chi will be majoring in international business at Concordia University this fall, and we are pleased to award her a $1000 business scholarship. Wee College extends wishes of success and happiness to Yen Chi as she embarks on her journey towards an international business career. She clearly represents our principle of leading by example. |
