November 10, 2023Staying Safe While Trick-or-Treating this Halloween!
Halloween is a beloved holiday, especially for children who eagerly anticipate dressing up in costumes
and collecting tasty treats. However, safety should always be a top priority, ensuring that this festive
occasion remains enjoyable for everyone involved. Whether you’re a parent, guardian, or someone
participating in the festivities, here are some important tips to keep in mind to have a safe and
enjoyable Halloween.
Plan Your Route Ahead of Time
Before heading out for trick-or-treating, plan the route you and your children will take. Stick to well-lit
and familiar areas where you know the houses and the residents. Consider marking a specific time for
trick-or-treating to ensure you’re back before it gets too dark.
Accompany Young Children
For young children, it’s best to have a trusted adult accompany them. An adult can ensure their safety
while navigating the neighborhood and help with traffic and other potential hazards.
Stay in Groups
If your children are old enough to go out on their own or with friends, emphasize the importance of
staying in groups. There’s safety in numbers, and it’s easier to keep track of one another. Encourage
them to use the buddy system and check in with each other regularly.
Use Reflective or Bright Costumes
When selecting costumes, opt for ones that are bright or have reflective elements. This will enhance
visibility, especially during the evening when it might be darker outside. If the costume is dark, consider
adding reflective tape or accessories to ensure others can see your child.
Choose Safe Costume Accessories
Ensure that costume accessories are safe and won’t cause any harm. Avoid sharp objects, opt for flexible
and soft props, and make sure costumes fit well to prevent tripping or falling.
Stay on Sidewalks and Cross at Crosswalks
Instruct your children to stay on the sidewalk and cross streets only at designated crosswalks. Teach
them to look both ways and make eye contact with drivers before crossing to ensure they are seen.
Inspect Treats Thoroughly
Before indulging in any treats, carefully inspect them to ensure they’re safe to consume. Discard any
opened or suspicious-looking packages. If your child has allergies, be especially vigilant in checking for
allergens in the treats.
Be Mindful of Allergies
If your child has allergies, remind them not to accept homemade treats or anything not in its original
packaging. Carry safe snacks with you to ensure they have options that are allergen-free.
Have Emergency Contacts Handy
Make sure your child has emergency contact information, including your phone number, written down
or stored in their phone. Teach them when and how to use it in case of an emergency.
Happy Halloween!
