How Did Father’s Day Start?
Do you believe Father’s Day started because mothers had their own special celebrations each year dating back to the 1800s?
Technically, you wouldn’t be wrong.
A day for honouring fathers was first considered in 1908 to honour the bravery and lives of 362 men that were killed in West Virginia’s 1907 ‘Monongah mining disaster,’ the worst mining incident of US history.
One year later, Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington began a movement and petitioned to government to have a nationally celebrated day to recognize and appreciate all that fathers provide their families – including her own father’s efforts of raising her and her six siblings alone.
It was not until April 24, 1972 that Father’s Day finally became recognized as a national holiday in North America, signed into law by President Nixon (source).
Father’s Day is now commonly celebrated around the world on the third Sunday in June in countries such as Japan, France, Turkey, Ireland, and India (source).
