June 12, 2019Keep Summer Fun – Summer Safety Tips for Children
June 21, 2019We are proud to announce the Wee College 2019 Scholarships have been awarded!
We were blessed with the highest number of applicants to date with applications from high school graduates to post-secondary attendees to those returning to school after time away.
After much consideration we decided to increase the number of scholarships from six to eight and are proud to introduce each of the recipients:
Alec Brooks
Alec is a dedicated and motivated Riverview High student who is not only involved in his school’s Student Government but also the community of Riverview.
He is proud to have dedicated over 300 hours of volunteer time to his community. Volunteering has strengthened his confidence and developed his leadership skills. He now feels ready for any challenge.
Teacher, Armand Doucet says, “Alec is a well-spoken leader and strong role model.”
Alec values resilience, activism and leadership and therefore will be pursuing a major in International relations. Alex says. “One day I aspire to become a humanitarian lawyer.”
Alec anticipates his education will lead him into a government position or humanitarian organization aiding those who need it most.
Alec will be attending Mount Allison University in the fall and is receiving our $1000.00 scholarship in memory of Evan Munro, son of our co-founder and CEO Melody Munro.
Olivia Lipton
It can be certainly said that Olivia leads by example.
She believes in giving of herself with participation in her school, Riverview High and in her community.
Olivia says, “I have purposely pushed myself outside my comfort zone by taking advantage of participating in many inspiring programs.”
Olivia has a love for acting, singing and dancing, early inspired and supported by her grandmother, which has resulted in over 60 performances.
But it is her kindness to others, willingness to go the extra mile that gets her noticed. These qualities have earned her recognition in leadership programs and in her volunteering, including the 2019 #Beccatoldmeto Outstanding Youth Volunteer of the Year Award.
Cassie MacPhail says, “Olivia has proven herself to be dedicated to helping others and more than willing to give her time, energy and heart to these endeavors.”
Olivia will be attending St Thomas University majoring in both psychology and Musical Theatre.
Rebecca Killam
Rebecca is a J.M.A Armstrong student who appreciates her small town roots and embraces the inspiration provided by her family, her church family and mentors.
For as long as she can remember she has wanted to work with children, participating in activities and programs that both give her hands-on experience but also opportunity to inspire younger kids. Rebecca takes pride in her contribution to her church as a junior choir leader, worship team member and youth group leader.
Rebecca’s initiative and desire carries over to her work in school as well. Teacher, Scott Bourque, describes Rebecca as “a strategic leader, hardworking, unafraid of challenges.”
This school year Rebecca has volunteered daily in a grade one class assisting Ms. Martin with activities. Ms. Martin speaks highly of Rebecca’s initiative so it no surprise that Rebecca will be attending Crandall University this fall with BEd aspirations in early education.
Kayla Cornett
CEO and leadership coach Steve Daniels speaks highly of Kayla, “a breath of fresh air, willing to answer the tough questions and always prepared.” This Riverview High graduate and soon to be Dalhousie University student has big plans for her future in medicine but remains humble in her success.
Those who know Kayla would describe her as kind, supportive and resilient. She would attribute these qualities to her grandmother who has been a huge role model for her. Kayla is also a role model academically and in her leadership endeavors but knows this is possible through peer and teacher guidance.
Kayla has actively participated in leadership coaching programs, student tutoring, school co-op program and ‘Sustainapalooza’. She can hold her head high for receiving a $2000 grant to make her vision a reality, the funding of a Cupboard “Take Home” program to assist students who may not access to food or personal hygiene products.
Emma McSheffery
Emma is a proud, soon to be, graduate of l’école L’Odyssée and will be attending the nursing program at l‘Université de Moncton this fall. She has strong role models in nursing through her grandmother and dance instructor Mary-Anne Leclerc.
For the past fourteen years, dance has been a huge focus in Emma’s life and she attributes it to many life lessons that one does not quickly associate with it.
“I have developed a sense of self-discipline and unwavering dedication”, says Emma, not to mention problem solving, perseverance and working as a team.
Emma’s family and friends can speak of Emma’s loyalty, devotion, honesty and love for the environment.
She is proud to be one of the first to stop using plastic straws and bringing her own reusable metal one. She takes initiative and tries to find solutions to problems.
“I want to make a difference and help people live the healthiest and happiest life possible.”
Laura Leaman
Laura graduates this month from Riverview High School and will be attending the University of Prince Edward Island with future aspirations in medicine. She feels this will be a good partnership between her love of the sciences and her desire to help others. Those who know her best speak of her genuine care for others, her abundance of empathy and generosity.
Laura is a passionate basketball player, is involved with her school and works part time raising funds for university.
“I am hard working and determined as I do not let failures slow me down or stop me from achieving my goals.”
This determination certainly came to light in her ‘Sustainapalooza’ project in which Laura and her two partners wanted to bring music therapy to seniors. Their pitch to the mayor and town council resulted in a grant and their project to coming to fruition in senior homes.
Hannah Stiles
Hannah has successfully completed her first year at Crandall University and is looking forward to the next. In addition to her studies, Hannah is an athlete for the university, a tutor and educator at Wee College Crandall.
Hannah spends much of her time focused on studies and work, however another one of her talents is music. She plays three instruments and loves to sing. She is a member of Luminos, a Christian worship band and also enjoys being part of the worship team at her local church.
Hannah strives to be the best version of herself in everything she does. Those who know her best speak of her kindness and generosity. Her work with the children is centered on their needs and is exceptional with children with special needs.
Her future goals revolve around music therapy and behavioral intervention.
“Anything that involves bettering troubled children is the area that I’d love to focus on.”
Courtney Lutes
This fall Courtney will be entering her second year of her undergraduate at Crandall University. Her future aspiration is teaching at the elementary school level.
Soccer has been a big part of her life throughout high school and now at the university. Being an athlete has taught lesson of hard work, dedication, sacrifice but has also brought satisfaction and reward. Chills are still experienced when Courtney thinks of a special banner win in her senior year at Harrison Tremble.
Courtney has a passion and natural gift for working with children.
“Working with children becomes a home away from home, a family away from your own.” Wee College Crandall children benefit from her Courtney’s passion and understanding daily.
She is someone who strives to put her full effort into what she is dedicated to and is establishing a strong path towards her goal of teaching.
Congratulations to all our scholarship recipients! We are so very proud of each of you, and we wish you great success with your academics and aspirations.
